Overview

Learn how to advocate for environmental practices in the construction industry and push for national and global sustainability targets, by studying Sustainable Infrastructure Construction and Management at Victoria University.

Conventional construction has adverse impacts on the environment. This course will equip you will the skills needed to help transition the industry to green building standards.

You'll learn how to challenge traditional construction methodologies to adopt modern technology, green materials and optimise resource efficiency.

While studying this course, you will:

  • analyse resource consumption and environmental impacts of construction processes and materials
  • gain industry-standard knowledge of innovative technologies
  • learn methods of maximising social outcomes
  • become familiar with sustainable procurement models.

The course will be delivered via both face to face and online learning.

This course consists of four smaller units:

  • Introduction to Infrastructure Sustainability (2 x 4 hours over two weeks)
  • Green Construction (2 x 4 hours over two weeks)
  • Water, Energy and Carbon (2 x 4 hours over two weeks)
  • Sustainable Procurement and Social Sustainability (2 x 4 hours over two weeks).

You can choose to enrol into each of these units individually.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • critically reflect on the role of infrastructure construction and operation on climate change, planetary health, and contribution towards global sustainable development goals
  • advocate for sustainability in the construction industry and persuade professionals to strive towards sustainable and innovative practices using advanced communication skills
  • assess resource consumption and environmental impacts of different materials used in infrastructure projects through formulation of life cycle assessments
  • challenge traditional construction methodologies to adopt modern technology, green materials and optimise resource efficiency
  • evaluate sustainable procurement models for risk minimisation during contractor selection and management to maximise environmental and social outcomes.

Course contents

Completion of 32 hours over 8 weeks

Due to the adverse impacts that conventional construction has on the environment, it is essential that the construction industry transitions to green building practices to achieve national and global sustainability targets. This unit will provide students with a critical understanding of the barriers to sustainable construction practices in the infrastructure sector and the management and communication skills necessary to work towards addressing them. Students will learn to analyse resource consumption and environmental impacts of construction processes and materials, and gain industry-standard knowledge on modern and innovative technologies. Additionally, methods of maximising social outcomes and sustainable procurement models are considered.
