Overview

Extend your dermal clinical knowledge and develop advanced micropigmentation (cosmetic tattooing) skills with this short course for industry professionals.

The course is suitable for qualified dermal clinicians or beauty therapists, nurses and medical professionals with relevant industry experience.

You will learn essential knowledge and practical skills to perform reconstructive micropigmentation procedures including nipple/areolar reconstruction and scar camouflage techniques.

Areas of study include:

  • infection control in skin penetration techniques
  • indications and contraindications for micropigmentation procedures
  • post-procedure complications and management
  • perform a range of micropigmentation techniques used for reconstructive purposes.

An important component of this course is clinical practice at our Dermal Clinic. You will gain hands-on experience using some of the most advanced, evidenced-based technologies available – to give you confidence and an industry edge. You will practise these under qualified supervision.

Course contents

This course requires students to complete one unit:

  • JQU00054 Micropigmentation

The use of pigments in the skin has a long history of being used for decoration and symbolism. In more recent times cosmetic tattooing has become a more popular form permanent make up application. This has extended to micropigmentation now being used as a way of decreasing the appearance of scars and other post-operative work.
The Micropigmentation and Cosmetic Tattooing for Professionals is a short course suitable for qualified dermal therapists with relevant education in the Dermal Therapies or Beauty Therapy disciplines, including graduates of the Victoria University Bachelor of Dermal Sciences degree, aswell as nursing and medical professionals.This course will give students the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to perform a range of cosmetic and reconstructive micropigmentation procedures. Topics will include infection control in skin penetration techniques, indications and contraindications for micropigmentation procedures, complications and the management of adverse events that arise from micropigmentation procedures, as well as the implications of using pigments in skin penetration for wound repair.

Admission & pathways

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

Applicants with a Bachelor of Dermal Science (or equivalent), current students from the Bachelor of Dermal Sciences degree, registered nurses and medical graduates will be considered for admission to the course. Applicants with a Diploma of Beauty Therapy with a minimum of 5 years' experience will also be considered for admission to the course.
Students are required to purchase a clinic kit prior to attending the VU Dermal Clinic.
