Our career-focused course will teach you to create effective online learning activities and content. You'll learn the production processes of digital instruction design and development, graduating ready to work in this ever-expanding field.
With a focus on contextual learning, this course draws on Victoria University’s award-winning Connected Learning area to offer real-world, exemplary learning-design methods.
You'll work on industry and community projects, and develop an interview-ready portfolio by the end of the course.
Graduating with up-to-date knowledge of technical tools and digital systems, you will understand how learning analytics can inform your work, and how courses can apply digital tools to better the learning experience.
With the goal of future-proofing your study, we will examine new and emerging areas within our field.
The course is designed for a range of professionals. Classes are held online out of business hours (no campus attendance required) and curriculum can be undertaken ahead of time.
In 2022, this course will be held only in online real-time mode. You'll join evening classes using Zoom. CSP and subsidised places available in 2022.

Undertake genuine, professional work
Work-focused learning is central to this education design course.
Drawing on knowledge in VU’s Connected Learning Unit and the College of Arts and Education, you will undertake client-driven projects, including industry-focused research. We look at education from a design perspective, producing learning designers who know how to educate using technology. Underpinning our work is educational design, and how can we create learning experiences that are engaging and match our pedagogy.
You may also choose to work on projects from your own organisation, reporting back to your work colleagues as part of the development process.
These genuine, professional experiences mean you graduate ready to launch a career in this modern and relevant field.
Develop an interview portfolio
During the course, you will develop a portfolio of work to enhance your job applications.
Initially, you will explore the research orientation of learning designers, and issues that are important to the field such as co-creation. By the end of the first unit, you will have begun the digital portfolio that we will build and refine during your study.
We will help you improve this portfolio as the units progress, offering feedback and guidance until it has reached a professional standard.
By course end, you will have a professional learning-designer portfolio to show potential employers.
Gain technical & interactive education design expertise
You will explore the technical and interactive design elements of learning design, as well as best-practice teaching and curriculum development.
In ‘Analysing the Web and Social Networks’ we examine the traces digital learners leave behind in order to find insights to improve our designs.
We also review important topics in the relatively new field of learning analytics and ethical issues such as data privacy.
Learn remotely
Our instructors run online classes that you can join from the comfort of home.
This allows you extra flexibility, saves your travel time, and allows you to experience some of the digital learning experience firsthand.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
| 1. | Create and critique online and digitally enabled educational instructional projects for a range of educational contexts through the systematic application of professional methodologies; | ||
| 2. | Formulate responsible, well-informed and ethical judgments in considering the role of education, design and digital media practitioners in a complex and highly dynamic industries; | ||
| 3. | Analyse and interpret data that informs the improvement of practice and critically apply cross-disciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge to recommend actions relevant to contemporary and emerging educational settings; | ||
| 4. | Investigate the role of different cultures, values and dispositions in the design of online educational products for niche audiences and report on findings, recommendations and implications for practice; | ||

What's a unit?
A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.
Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take and optional elective units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.
Credits
Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Fee type definitions
The amount you pay for your course depends on whether you’re offered a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) or a full fee-paying place.
Students who enrol in a:
- Commonwealth supported place pay tuition fees that are partly subsidised by the Australian government
- full fee-paying place need to pay the full amount for all enrolled units before census each study period.
In addition to your tuition fees, you may also be charged a Student Services & Amenities Fee (SSAF).

Entry requirements
Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a similar discipline
OR
Applicants with a minimum five (5) years approved work experience will be considered for admission to this course.
