How will you take a stand on the global issues you are passionate about?

VU Student Life & Leadership are partnering with Common Purpose to give you the opportunity to earn a Global Citizenship micro-credential. This free online course will help you develop the skills and competencies needed to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The course features nine hours of self-directed learning that is accessible across four weeks.

At the end of the course you can earn the Global Citizenship micro-credential, demonstrating to the world that you have the skills to tackle complex global issues and stand up as leaders.

About the course

Global Citizenship is an experiential online course (ie based on experience and observation), through which you will develop skills and competencies needed to thrive in the 21st century, while learning more about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This will enable you to play an active role in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The three-week course offers nine hours of learning that you can complete at your own pace alongside a global network of your peers from VU and other universities in the region.

The course is funded by our SSAF (student services and amenities fee), making it free for VU students.

During the course, you will engage with and learn from each other and, through video content, hear from inspiring future and current senior leaders across the world.

During the course, you will complete:

  • experiential activities
  • offline tasks and reflections
  • facilitated discussions
  • plans to advance a Sustainable Development Goal.

The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are 'the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all'.

Global Citizenship micro-credential

After you successfully complete the course, you can earn the ‘Global Citizenship’ micro-credential, demonstrating to the world that you have the skills to tackle complex global issues. This can be displayed on your LinkedIn page.

As a result of the course, you will be:

  • equipped to take rapid action on the SDG that you choose
  • able to step outwards and collaborate with diverse networks
  • ready to challenge preconceptions and better inform people’s perspectives
  • better equipped to operate across hierarchies
  • better prepared to live and maintain your values and integrity.

“Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this fantastic course! I will take all the learning to heart and apply them to future practices as a global citizen!”
