To study at Victoria University (VU) as an international student you must meet academic and English-language requirements.

Check that your qualification meets the international minimum academic requirements for a course.

You must take a recognised English language test no more than two years before you start your course. If your qualification was mostly taught in English, check the English language requirements to see if you are eligible for an English-language exemption.

In some cases, there may be additional or supplementary entry requirements.

Academic entry requirements for bachelor degrees

Entry into undergraduate courses (for example a bachelor degree) generally requires you to have completed a secondary school qualification equivalent to an Australian Year 12 certificate.

English language requirements for bachelor degrees

You will need to provide evidence that you have achieved one of the following levels of English language proficiency:

  • IELTS: overall score of 6.0, no band less than 6.0
  • TOEFL: overall score of 67, section scores no less than:
    • Listening: 12
    • Speaking: 18
    • Reading: 15
    • Writing: 21
  • PTE: overall score of 50-57, no section score less than 50
  • CAE: overall score of 169, no individual band less than 169
  • VU English – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Level 5): achieved.

Research programs

Postgraduate academic entry requirements

Entry into a research program (postgraduate study) requires completion of:

  • an honours degree, or
  • a masters degree by coursework with a research component, or
  • an equivalent qualification from an approved university.

If you have a masters degree that did not include a research component, you may be eligible for one of our PhD (Integrated) programs with our Institutes for Health and Sport or Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities.

We will assess your eligibility when we receive your complete international research degree application.

You will need to provide evidence have achieved the following levels of English language proficiency:

  • IELTS: overall score of 6.5, no band less than 6.0

Additional or supplementary entry requirements

In some cases, courses will require additional requirements for entry to a VU course. You may need to provide information such as:

  • proof of work experience
  • a portfolio or folio of works
  • a police check or working with children check from your usual country of residence
  • a supplementary information form.

Exchange & study abroad students

To apply for the study abroad or exchange program, you need to have achieved an average of 65% or 2.5 grade point average (on a scale of 4 or equivalent) in your studies.
