Overview

Build your leadership skills for management and supervisory roles with the Diploma of Leadership and Management, BSB50420, at Victoria University Polytechnic.

You will learn innovative approaches to managing people, projects, and teams in a wide range of industries and organisations. This course is designed for individuals who are seeking to commence or progress their career in leadership and management who may have some experience in an industry and may already be managing staff, or working towards a career as a manager.

You will develop the skills and emotional intelligence to lead and manage the following:

  • workplace relationships
  • effective teams and individuals
  • people performance
  • professional development.

You will also gain a range of technical skills, including:

  • management of business operational plans
  • finance and budgeting
  • development of workplace learning
  • project management.

On completion of this course you may be able to pursue the following jobs:

Graduating with a qualification in Business from VU Polytechnic will put you ahead of the game. You’ll learn fundamental skills you can apply in any sector, preparing you for a range of careers, including:

Course structure

The course structure comprises of the following core and elective units. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback.

To be awarded the BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management, a student must successfully complete a total of twelve (12) units of competency, comprising of:
- Six (6) core units, and;- Six (6) elective units, of which

  • 4 elective units must be selected from the qualification BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management
  • for the remaining 2 elective units:
  • up to 2 units may be selected from the qualification BSB50420 Diploma of Leadership and Management
  • if not listed, up to 2 units may be selected from a Certificate IV or above, from this or any other currently endorsed Training Package qualification or accredited course.

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply knowledge, practical skills and experience in leadership and management across a range of enterprise and industry contexts.
Upon completion of this course graduates will be able to demonstrate initiative and judgement in planning, organising, implementing and monitoring their own workload and the workload of others. They will be able to use communication skills to support individuals and teams to meet organisational or enterprise requirements.
It will enable them to plan, design, apply and evaluate solutions to unpredictable problems, and identify, analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources.

The qualification requires students to have a sound theoretical knowledge base and managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate their own work or the work of a team.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.As part of the application process, applicants must complete a Pre-training Review (PTR) and undertake a literacy and numeracy (LN) assessment to determine course suitability.
