Overview

Develop an understanding of cyber-crime, security principles, technologies and procedures used to defend networks with Cybersecurity Essentials THABC short course at Victoria University Polytechnic.

Course delivery

This course will be delivered online in a combination of self paced learning with two instructor-led sessions. Participants will receive their login details to the Learning Management System prior to course commencement.

This Cybersecurity Essentials THABC course uses the Cisco Network Academy 'Cybersecurity Essentials' module. Using industry-standard techniques and software, it will help you to develop an understanding of:

  • cybercrime
  • security principles
  • technologies and procedures used to defend networks
  • critical thinking and problem solving.

The recent move to remote, digital work due to COVID-19 has pushed the need for rapid digital transformation across multiple industries and organisations at a national and global level.

Post COVID-19, digitally supported remote-work practices are to become more common place, and have driven the need to have an increased understanding of cyber safety, both personal and professional.

On top of this, the cybersecurity industry is growing rapidly, with the ITPA report estimating Australia would need another 11,000 Cybersecurity specialists over the next decade.

Learning outcomes

This Cybersecurity Essentials course utilises the Cisco Network Academy 'Cybersecurity Essentials' module to help participants begin to develop an understanding of cybercrime, security principles, technologies and procedures used to defend networks, as well as start to understand critical thinking and problem solving utilising industry standard techniques and software.

Participants will work through the Cisco learning resources online, attending scheduled online webinars led by a qualified CCAI instructor from VU Polytechnic.

The program is delivered over thirty (30) hours and delivered online across a four (4) week period. This consists of eight (8) hours provided online via facilitated webinar and additional twenty-two (22) hours completed as self-paced learning via the training modules from Cisco NetAcademy.

This program requires participants to have solid digital literacy skills and be capable with digital technology. The course will assume that participants who commence have a reasonable grasp of general computing skills such as email, navigating a Windows or MAC OS, internet searches and navigating a webpage to find information, attend an online webinar.
