Start learning the basics of English, with VU Polytechnic’s Course in Initial EAL 22482VIC.
During this course you will learn to sound and read words, and to recognise and write letters. You will also begin to develop handwriting skills.
You will develop the skills in the following:
- recognising letters of the alphabet and their sounds
- beginning learning strategies
- recognising and copying extremely familiar words
- participating in extremely familiar spoken exchanges
- recognising and copying numbers from 1 to 100
- beginning to identify digital media.
When you finish this course you will be able to study at the next level in English.

Course contents
To be awarded the 22482VIC Course in Initial EAL, a student must successfully complete a total of six (6) core units of competency.
Course structure and units
CORE UNITS
Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Transfers
Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by the Polytechnic.
Learning outcomes
Designed for newly or recently arrived pre-literate learners, VU Polytechnic's Course in Initial EAL will help to develop and establish learning routines.
During this course you will learn to sound and read words, and to recognise and write letters. You will also begin to develop hand writing skills.
You will develop the skills in the following:

recognising letters of the alphabet and their sounds;

recognising and copying extremely familiar words;

participating in extremely familiar spoken exchanges;

recognising and copying numbers from 1 to 100, and;

beginning to identify digital media.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to undertake further study in English and continue to develop your skills.
