Overview

Develop basic English skills including speaking and handwriting, with a Course in English as an Additional Language (EAL) 22483VIC at VU Polytechnic.

During this course you will develop beginner skills in English speaking, listening, reading, writing and maths.

You will develop your skills as a student, and learn how to:

  • give basic personal details
  • explain basic needs
  • listen to and give information and instructions
  • participate in conversations
  • read and write short basic messages
  • read and complete basic forms
  • read and write short sentences
  • give and follow simple directions
  • read measurements and recognise information which includes numbers.

After this course you will be able to keep studying English to develop your skills.

This certificate is part of the Western Melbourne English Program (WMEP).

The program offers a range of services, including counselling, and housing and financial advice.

Skills First (subsidised) indicative fees

The Skills First government contribution in 2023 towards this course is $3,850. If eligible, you will pay:

Course contents

To be awarded the 22483VIC Course in EAL, a student must successfully complete a total of nine (9) units of competency, comprising of:

  • one (1) core unit;
  • three (3) core Speaking and Listening units;
  • two (2) core Reading and Writing units, and;
  • three (3) Numeracy elective units from those listed in the accredited course.

    Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by the Polytechnic.

    Designed for newly or recently arrived learners, this course will help you to develop basic English skills. During this course you will develop initial skills in English speaking, listening, reading, writing, numeracy and learning.

    Upon completion of this course you will learn to:
    -
    develop learning strategies for language learning;
    -
    communicate basic personal details and needs;
    -
    listen to and give information and instructions;
    -
    participate in extremely familiar spoken exchanges;
    -
    read and write short basic messages;
    -
    read and complete basic forms;
    -
    read and write short sentences;
    -
    develop numeracy skills for giving and following simple directions, understanding, and;
    - measurements and recognising information which includes numbers.

    Upon completion of this course you will be able to undertake further study in English and continue to develop your skills.

    Note - Location availability will depend on student demand. Location preferences and availability are discussed with applicants during their Pre-training review interview.
