The construction, engineering and fabrication industries are some of the largest industries for employment within Australia. This Certificate IV in Engineering MEM40119 from Victoria University Polytechnic can help get your foot in the door.

You’ll be prepared for a variety of roles (including foreperson, inspector and technician roles) within the engineering and manufacturing sectors, as well as engineering tradesperson roles in other industries.

Course structure

To be awarded MEM40119 Certificate IV in Engineering, a student must successfully complete the following:

  • twelve (12) core units (totalling 33 points), and:
  • elective units comprising of:
  • units selected from Group A, to the value of at least twelve (12) points, and;
  • units selected from Group B to a maximum value of eighty seven (87) points to bring the total value to one hundred and thirty two (132) points of which:
    • appropriate Group B units to the value of fourteen (14) points may be chosen from this Training Package, other endorsed Training Packages and accredited courses where those units are available for inclusion in Certificate III and Certificate IV qualifications. Only select units that would be suitable for occupational outcomes in a higher engineering trade environment.

Electives must be industry relevant as well as be approved by the Polytechnic.

VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the ‘course structure and units’ below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Please note: Group A and Group B Electives must not be interchanged with Group A - Alternative Electives and Group B - Alternative Electives.

Group A and Group B Electives are packaged for the Mechanical stream, whereas Group A and Group B Alternative are packaged for Fabrication stream.

Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Transfers:

Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by the Polytechnic.

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge to demonstrate, broad theoretical concepts, application of skills and knowledge, problem solving, information interpretation and output responsibility.

Students who enrol in a:

  • government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
  • full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Admission & pathways

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to complete a Pre-Training Review and a literacy and numeracy assessment to assist with determining suitability.Students must have completed Certificate III in Engineering or Fabrication or provide evidence of equivalent experience in order to gain credits and/or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). In accordance with qualification requirements students must have access to a suitable workplace for on the-job training or is an existing apprentice under an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement. The training involves face to face theory and requires a specified number of hours of practice on relevant skills in a workplace. It should not be used as a pre-employment or pre-apprenticeship program.

There are many ways you can start your education journey at VU. Pathways offer an easy transition between courses at different levels, so that you can start with a certificate and progress right through to postgraduate study.
