July 2023 intake is only available at Werribee Campus.
During this course you will learn how to provide non-emergency transport and care for patients who have non-acute or chronic illness or disability. You will gain the skills to provide appropriate patient assessment and safely move a patient for pre-arranged or booked transport service.
Learning from our expert staff through our award-winning interactive e-learning model, you will gain healthcare skills such as:
- interpreting and applying medical terminology
- recognising healthy body systems
- providing first aid
- infection prevention and control procedures
- providing advanced resuscitation
- assessing and delivering basic clinical care
- procedures for routine safe removal of a patient
- transporting non-emergency patients
In addition, you'll gain essential people skills, such as:
- communicating in a health or community services environment
- working with diverse people and safe work practices for client care.
This course also prepares you to provide assistance to ambulance drivers and other paramedicine professionals.
Practical learning & clinical placement
Clinical placement across the NEPT and event sector is provided to students. Participating in 80 hours of work placement will give you practical industry experience as well as on-the-job confidence.
Upon completion of this course you will have the confidence and skills to seek employment in the health industry as a non-emergency patient transport officer or first aider, or continue onto further study.
COVID-19 vaccine requirement
In response to Victoria's Roadmap announced in September 2021, all students must have any COVID-19 vaccine prior to the commencement of placement.
- You must provide evidence of having the COVID-19 vaccine. If you are not compliant with this requirement you are not eligible to undertake a placement and progress within the course.
- Be willing to undergo any additional checks and immunisations as directed by the University.

Course structure
To be awarded the HLT31120 Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport, a student must successfully complete a total of thirteen (13) units of competency, comprising of:
- Eleven (11) core units
- Two (2) elective units, consisting of:
- at least One (1) unit from the electives listed from the qualification HLT31120 Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport
- up to One (1) unit from the electives listed below or from any other current endorsed Training Package or accredited course.
The selection of electives must be relevant to the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the complexity of skills appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification.

These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Elective Units
Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Transfers. Alternative suitable electives are only available for industry delivery or via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) and must be approved by VU Polytechnic.
Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by the Polytechnic.
Learning outcomes
This qualification reflects the role of workers such as non-emergency patient transport officers who provide non-emergency transport and care for patients who have non-acute or chronic illness or disability and require transport. Workers in this role provide appropriate patient assessment, follow procedures for safe removal of a patient for transport for pre-arranged or booked transport service and the time of response is not given high priority in comparison to emergency transport.

As part of the application process applicants must:
- be at least 18 years of age or over by the time of commencement date of the program
- complete a Pre-training Review (PTR)
- undertake a literacy and numeracy (LN) assessment to determine suitability for admission
- hold a driver's Licence (probationary licence accepted)

If students are not compliant with this requirement they are not eligible to undertake a placement and this will mean that they will not be able to progress within their course.
Failure to provide the required documents in the timeframe specified by the Course Coordinator, means you will be unable to undertake practical placement in a workplace and therefore not eligible to progress in this course.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
