Overview

Learn foundational beauty services and make-up application skills with the Certificate III in Make-Up SHB30221 at Victoria University Polytechnic.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to work as a make-up professional in a variety of roles across the beauty, fashion, media and entertainment industries. You will also develop practical skills in the latest trends and techniques including special occasion, fashion make-up, airbrushing and camouflage.

On completion you will have the skills to:

  • design and apply make up
  • design and apply make up for photography
  • design and apply creative make up
  • design and apply remedial camouflage make up
  • conduct financial transactions
  • apply safe hygiene, health and work practices.

The course is delivered over 6 months for 3.5 days a week.

For students undertaking this course as part of the Vocational Education Delivered to Secondary Schools (VDSS) program, the course will be delivered over two years on a part-time basis.

Aura at VU is a student-training salon located at Victoria University's City Tower Campus. The salon simulates the work environment providing fee-paying clientele. Students complete trainer-led theoretical learning in a classroom environment, utilising the VU online Learning Management system and hands-on practical activities in the VU operating salon.

Course structure

To be awarded SHB30221 Certificate III in Make-Up, a student must successfully complete a total of Fifteen (15) units, consisting of: 

  • Eight (8) Core units, and;
  • Seven (7) Elective units, consisting of: 
  • One (1) unit from Group A: Infection control;
  • at least three (3) units from Group B: General electives, and;
  • up to three (3) units from the list below, elsewhere in the SHB Training Package, or any other current Training Package or accredited course.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals employed as make-up artists to design and apply make-up for a range of purposes and occasions across the beauty, fashion, media and entertainment industries.
These individuals possess a range of well-developed technical and consultation skills where discretion and judgement is required and are responsible for their own outputs. This includes working cooperatively with a range of individuals including photographers, fashion stylists and media production staff.
Work is typically conducted as part of a team or on a freelance basis in settings such as make-up studios, retail cosmetic counters, fashion and media sets and photography studios.

Vocational Education Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS):
VCE VET programs for Vocational Major (VM) and Vocational Pathway Certificate (VPC) students are vocational training programs approved by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). VCE VET programs for VM and VPC students, lead to nationally recognised qualifications or partial completion of qualifications, thereby offering students the opportunity to gain both the VCE and a nationally portable vocational education and training (VET) certificate or the VCE and a Statement of Attainment listing the units they have attained.

• are fully recognised within the Units 1 to 4 structure of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE VM) and therefore may contribute towards satisfactory completion of the VCE VM.

Domestic:
As part of the application process, applicants must complete a Pre-training Review (PTR) and undertake a literacy and numeracy (LN) assessment to determine suitability for admission.
VET Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS):
The literacy and numeracy levels of applicants will be assessed through consultation with the relevant Secondary school. As part of the application process, applicants must complete a Pre-training Review (PTR) to determine suitability for admission.
VCE VM/VPC (VCAL)Applicants must be 16 years and over at the time of course commencement.
