Course structure
VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the course structure and units below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback.
To be awarded the ICT30120 - Certificate III in Information Technology, a student must successfully complete a total of twelve (12) units of competency, comprising of:
- six (6) core units, and;
- six (6) elective units, of which:
* at least 4 units must be selected from the elective units listed
* up to 2 units may be selected from the remaining listed elective units or from this or any other currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 2, 3 or 4.
Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT). Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome approved by VU Polytechnic.

Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Transfers: Previous completion of units at the VU Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by the Victoria University Polytechnic.

Knowledge:
Graduates at this level will be competent in a wide range of general information and communications technology (ICT) technical functions and to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency as an ICT user. Individuals working at this level will be able to support information technology activities in the workplace across both a wide range of ICT areas, including technical support, network administration, web technologies, software applications and digital media technologies as well as utilising ICT skills in other areas of a business such as administration, customer service or support roles.
ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology is a foundation pathway course in the ICT field, providing a bridge to future higher level training options or entry-level skills to assist individuals looking to upskill and return to the workforce.
Skills:
Graduates of Certificate III in Information Technology will be able to perform a range of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) roles, including animation, basic cloud computing, basic cyber awareness, digital media skills, generalist IT support services, networking, programming, systems and web development.
Most jobs today involve technology and nearly all jobs of the future will revolve around technology.
Employment:
Upon completion of the Certificate III in Information Technology, students will be equipped to work across varying entry-level roles within the ICT industry, including but not limited to:
- technical support
- network administration
- web technologies and development
- software applications
- digital media
Students will also be able to apply their broad digital knowledge to wider sections of a business outside of IT, e.g. working in administration and updating/building a company website.
