This course is designed for people learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). You will develop English-language speaking, listening, reading, writing and learning skills. This training will prepare you for further English-language education, tertiary or vocational education, as well as future employment.
You will also develop skills to:
- practise casual conversations
- understand and give information and directions
- read and write straightforward information and instructions
- read and write straightforward descriptions and stories
- use the internet and email to develop your language skills
- find out about Australian issues, art and culture
- work with a range of numbers and money.
On completion of this course, you will be confident communicating in a wide range of situations in social and community life, as well as in some workplace situations.

Course structure
The course structure comprises the following core and elective units. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback.
To be awarded the 22486VIC Certificate III in EAL (Access), a student must successfully complete a total of eight (8) units of competency, comprising of:
- one (1) core unit, and
- seven (7) elective units, of which:
- one (1) unit to be selected from the Speaking and Listening electives;
- one (1) unit to be selected from the Reading and Writing electives;
- two (2) units to be selected from the Language Skills electives which have not been previously completed from:
- 22486VIC Certificate III in EAL (Access);
- units in the Certificate II, III and IV qualifications in this EAL Framework;
- three (3) unit to be selected from:
- general electives listed in the 22486VIC Certificate III in EAL (Access) qualification;
- general electives listed in the Certificate II, III and IV qualifications in this EAL Framework;
- units/modules which are first packaged in AQF level 2, 3 or 4 qualifications in other accredited curricula and/or endorsed training packages.

These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Recognition of Prior Learning and/or Credit Transfers:
Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by the Polytechnic.
Learning outcomes
Certificate III in EAL (Access) outcomes focus on the consolidation of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills so that participants can access a range of further and vocational education options which may require some specialisation. Participants include those who have been out of the workforce for a period and wish to further develop English language skills and research pathway options or seek employment.

Entry requirements
As part of the application process, all applicants are required to attend an interview to complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) and complete a literacy and numeracy assessment to determine suitability.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
