This course is designed for people learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). You will develop English-language speaking, listening, reading, writing and learning skills for employment.
You will also develop skills to:
- practise simple conversations for employment
- read and write simple information for employment
- observe and report on workplace activities
- prepare for work in an Australian workplace
- write job applications
- develop job interview skills
- explore transport options.
On completion of this course, you will be confident communicating in workplace situations.

Course structure
To be awarded the 22488VIC Certificate II in EAL (Employment), a student must successfully complete a total of eight (8) units of competency, comprising of:
- five (5) core units, and;
- three (3) elective units, which have not been previously completed from:
- elective units listed in the 22488VIC Certificate II in EAL (Employment) qualification;
- units listed in the Certificate I, II and/or III qualifications in this EAL Framework;
- units/modules which are first packaged in AQF level 2 or 3 qualifications in other accredited curricula and/or endorsed training packages.

VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the ‘course structure and units’ below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Learning outcomes
Certificate II in EAL (Employment) outcomes focus on the development of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and knowledge in the context of the Australian workplace. Participants may have differing levels of work experience and in diverse contexts prior to coming to Australia. Others will have had no workplace experience. The qualification includes outcomes focussing on preparation for employment, employability skills, literacy skills including digital literacy skills, and awareness of basic workplace safety and work culture in the Australian context.

- government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
- full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Entry requirements
As part of the application process, all applicants are required to attend an interview to complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) and complete a literacy and numeracy assessment to determine suitability.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
