Overview

Build your foundational skills and knowledge in basic applied digital technologies in preparation for work with the Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies.

Throughout this course you will develop general information and communication technology skills, and gain an understanding of software, digital media packages and social media tools.

Upon completion of this course you will have gained essential knowledge and skills needed to prepare you for work and traineeship roles, including:

  • attendance
  • punctuality
  • teamwork
  • communication
  • problem solving skills.

This course is ideal for anyone generally performing under direct supervision.

You'll have access to a rich collection of online resources at any time of the day or night, including databases, e-learning content for courses, student email, student software packages and social networking tools.

VU has one of the best campus-wide WiFi networks. We also have more than 4000 computers (PCs and Apple Mac) spread across our campuses. Our central IT helpdesk is also available for support.

Technology is deeply rooted in our professional and personal lives and the need for skilled workers is growing fast. The Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies provides you with the foundational skills and knowledge to use information and communications technology (ICT) in any industry. Upon completion you will have gained the skills to prepare you for careers such as:

  • office support worker
  • office assistant.

Course structure

VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the course structure and units below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback.

To be awarded the ICT20120 Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies, a student must successfully complete a total of 12 units of competency, comprising of:

  • six (6) core units, and;
  • six (6) elective units, of which: 

- at least 3 must be from Group A 

- of the remaining electives: all may be from elsewhere in this or any other currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course at AQF Level 1, 2 or 3.

Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification, and contribute to a valid industry-supported vocational outcome. Electives must be industry relevant as well as be approved by the Polytechnic.

Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Units in transition

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for individuals to be competent in the foundation skills and knowledge for use within the wide range of general information and communications technology (ICT) technologies. Persons working at this level apply a range of knowledge and skills in basic information and communications technology, with an understanding of software packages, digital media packages, social media tools and working safely and ethically in a sustainable work environment.

Vocational Education Delivered to Secondary Schools (VETDSS)
VCE VET programs for Vocational Major (VM) and Vocational Pathway Certificate (VPC) students are vocational training programs approved by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). VCE VET programs for VM and VPC students, lead to nationally recognised qualifications or partial completion of qualifications, thereby offering students the opportunity to gain both the VCE and a nationally portable vocational education and training (VET) certificate or the VCE and a Statement of Attainment listing the units they have attained.

VCE VET programs for VM and VPC students:
• are fully recognised within the Units 1 to 4 structure of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE VM) and therefore may contribute towards satisfactory completion of the VCE VM.
• may contribute to the satisfactory completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE VPC)• function within the National Training Framework.

Fee type definitions

The amount you pay for your course depends on whether you’re offered a government subsidised place or a full fee-paying place.

Students who enrol in a:

  • government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
  • full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Admission & pathways

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

Entry requirements


As part of the application process, applicants must complete a Pre-training Review (PTR) and undertake a literacy and numeracy (LN) assessment to determine suitability for admission.
VETDSS: The literacy and numeracy levels of applicants will be assessed through consultation with the relevant secondary school.VCE/VPC: Applicants must be 16 years and over at the time of course commencement.

There are many ways you can start your education journey at VU. Pathways offer an easy transition between courses at different levels, so that you can start with a certificate and progress right through to postgraduate study.

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
