Gain valuable workplace skills and confidence with a Certificate I in Work Education 22566VIC at Victoria University Polytechnic.
This course is designed for young people with additional needs. You will develop personal management skills, communication, confidence and independence in preparation for work and further study.
This course will give you an understanding of basic workplace expectations. We will support your additional needs and help you to gain skills in:
- job seeking and employability
- work readiness
- personal management
- teamwork and communication
- basic literacy and numeracy
- applying strategies to support workplace participation
- use of everyday technology relevant to the workplace.
As part of the Work Education Program, you will investigate and identify vocational options that you may wish to pursue in the future. You will have the opportunity to participate in a range of vocational activities, including furniture making and hospitality, which will give you an understanding of the tasks required in related job roles and how to carry them out effectively. These vocational activities will support you to pathway into further courses.

Course structure
The course structure comprises the following core and elective units. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback.
To be eligible for the award of 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education learners must successfully complete a total of Ten (10) units comprising:
* Seven (7) core units
* Three (3) electives which may be selected from:
- units listed in the 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education curriculum
- units first packaged in Certificate I qualifications in endorsed training packages or accredited courses
- units first packaged in an accredited ‘Course in..’.
Selection of electives must reflect the integrity and intent of the qualification.

These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by Victoria University Polytechnic.
Learning outcomes
The Certificate I in Work Education supports post compulsory school age learners with permanent cognitive and / or intellectual disabilities to explore work options and access pathways to further specific vocational education and training. It supports learners to improve their employability and work readiness.In exceptional circumstances compulsory school age learners with evidence of permanent cognitive and / or intellectual disability may be enrolled in the qualification.
The outcomes of the 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education are consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQTF) Standards 1 and 2 for Accredited Courses. The qualification is used with learners who have varying degrees of permanent cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities and whose disabilities inhibit access to education and training pathways to open employment. Learners can have a range of complex cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities along a broad spectrum and come from a range of educational experiences including:
* from specialist or main stream schools
* following completion of Certificate I in Transition Education
* after having been in care of family or other care providers

• follow and apply OHS/ WHS and emergency procedures in specific industries
• access and use information on vocational options and employment and workplace requirements
• ask and respond to simple questions to clarify vocational goals and work activities
• interact with other class / work group members and work with a support person
• follow instructions to carry out tasks and participate in vocational activities
• identify simple strategies to improve personal management skills and ways in which barriers to employment participation can be overcome
• identify own vocational goals and develop a personal action plan to support employment
• manage daily routines
• identify and monitor personal goals and develop a basic vocational plan for identified employment opportunities
• identify areas of interest through participation in vocational tasters
• review own performance as part of practical placement
• implement simple strategies to increase and maintain independence• identify own self development and support needs and seek assistance when required

Fee type definitions
The amount you pay for your course depends on whether you’re offered a government subsidised place or a full fee-paying place.
Students who enrol in a:
- government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
- full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

Entry requirements
Entry to the 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education is intended for post compulsory school age learners with evidence of permanent cognitive and/or intellectual disability. Evidence of permanent cognitive and / or intellectual disability could include but is not limited to:
* Formal assessment by a registered medical practitioner
* Doctors / specialist reports
* Attendance at a Specialist School
* Integration support at school
* Integration support at school with modified curriculum
As part of the application process, applicants must complete a Pre-training Review (PTR) and undertake a literacy and numeracy (LN) assessment to determine suitability for admission.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
