Overview

Gain the skills to lead learning programs outside the traditional classroom with the Bachelor of Education Studies (EBST) from Victoria University. EBST is also an alternative path into teaching.

Our Bachelor of Education Studies will give you the teaching skills and knowledge to work in a number of community and private settings, including:

  • mentoring and tutoring programs
  • community programs
  • public and welfare services
  • after-school care
  • teacher aide positions.

You can steer your education-focused career into an area of personal passion, with a relevant major or minor from our broad options. Possibilities include:

  • PE/physical education (secondary)
  • arts (music, visual arts and media)
  • community (health, welfare, disability or psychology)
  • English (literary studies and teaching English as an additional language)
  • humanities (history, cultural or Indigenous studies)
  • ICT (digital media)
  • maths
  • outdoor education
  • science specialisations.

Please note: this course does not provide you with the prerequisites for teacher registration.

Course location

At VU, we offer alternative paths to education career qualifications. After graduating, you may progress to our Master of Teaching (Secondary) or Master of Teaching (Primary Education) and become a registered teacher, on meeting the entry requirements.

This course shares a common first year with the Bachelor of Education. If you successfully complete the first year and meet the skills benchmarks, LANTITE and non-academic attributes assessment, you may apply to transfer into the second year of the school-teaching course Bachelor of Education (P-12).

You’ll gain invaluable work experience through our industry placements and work-integrated learning.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have explored the community education sector, building your understanding and becoming work ready.

We offer a range of practical projects, including with the renowned Immigration Museum, who have worked with our students to identify community learning needs in Neighbourhood Houses.

VU’s Learning Hubs are welcoming spaces where you can improve your study and employability skills.

Our students can attend Learning Hubs at one of five VU campuses.

We offer maths, writing, careers and English-language advice and can show you effective ways to study and manage your time.

Bachelor of Education Studies prepares you for a wide range of important work with an education focus where teacher registration is not required, including:

  • adult education
  • teacher aide

This course is approved as a pathway program by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), the independent statutory authority for the teaching profession. It is a legal requirement for all teachers to be registered with VIT in order to be employed in a school or early childhood education and care service or Victorian children’s service.

Course structure

To attain the Bachelor of Education Studies, students will be required to complete 288 credit points, consisting of:

  • 96 credit points of First Year Core units
  • 48 credit points of Core studies
  • 48 credit points of Minor studies
  • 96 credit points of Major studies

We are the first Australian university to use a 'block' model of learning, where you study one unit at a time rather than juggling several at once.

Introduced in 2018, the VU Block Model has improved our student results and achievements, and has won awards for innovation and excellence. Initially for first-year students, it now applies to all students studying at our Melbourne campuses.

You'll study in short bursts, called blocks, of three 2-3 hour face-to-face teaching sessions per week.

Each block focuses on one unit (subject) and is only four weeks long, with up to four days between. Our two semesters have four blocks each, and there are optional blocks over winter and summer where you can catch up on a missed unit.

Some courses have labs and pracs too, and these are generally scheduled on the same days as teaching sessions. There are also workshops where you'll develop your study skills and prepare for your future career.

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse and evaluate perspectives in the theory, research and practice of education in community and human service contexts in a changing world;  
  2. Review the conditions for lifelong learning appropriate to individuals and groups in social settings, incorporating ethical, sustainable and socially inclusive criteria;  
  3. Plan, implement, assess and evaluate educational programs and activities that demonstrate practical, recreational and creative skills;  
  4. Research and critically reflect on practice and communicate ideas as an educator in community and human services;  
  5. Engage effectively in teaching teams and work collaboratively as members of a work based team;  
  6. Respect and value diversity and difference as a positive resource to be encouraged within the community and its organisations.  

What's a unit?

A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.

Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take and optional elective units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.

Credits

Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Entry requirements

Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (VCE or equivalent) including Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English (or equivalent).
PLUS:
IELTS (or equivalent): Overall score or 6.0 (with no band less than 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).
OR:
Completion of a Foundation course or equivalent.
