Cyber security is one of Australia’s fastest growing fields in the IT industry. This course will equip you with a comprehensive set of technical services such as:

  • performing a security risk assessment for an organisation
  • implementing best practice for identity management
  • evaluating an organisation’s compliance with relevant cyber security standards, laws and codes of practice
  • evaluating and implementing security protection devices and software
  • managing a cyber security environment
  • assessing and securing cloud services
  • performing digital forensic investigations on workstations and mobile devices.

This course is suitable for you if you have a strong understanding of cyber security concepts or you’re looking to pursue a career in the IT industry. You may have completed the Certificate IV in Cyber Security 22334VIC, or already be working in the industry and are interested in upskilling/specialising in cyber security.

With access to our Cyber Security Training Centre in our St Albans Campus and also to the virtual industry standard lab via Fifth Domain's cloud platform, you will have the opportunity during your course to train in a simulated working environment for collaboration and practical experience, forming teams to produce solutions to industry standard problems.

Located at our St Albans campus, our Cyber Security Training Centre will help prepare you for the unpredictable future of work.

The facility features a Security Operations Centre (SOC), providing a simulated working environment for collaboration and practical experience. Attack and defend rooms put you in the hot seat, allowing you to take on the role of hacker or defender and put your skills to the test.

Australia’s cybersecurity sector will experience a huge worker shortage over the coming years as cyber attacks grow. It is expected there will be a shortfall of 3,000 cybersecurity workers in Australia by 2026. At the same time, the number of cyber attacks in Australia is expected to double in the next five years. Upon completion of the Advanced Diploma of Cyber Security 22445VIC you will have gained the skills to prepare you for careers such as:

  • cyber security support officer
  • security penetration tester
  • information systems security support officer
  • network security support officer
  • website security support officer.

Course structure

The course structure has been chosen from the following core and elective units.
To be awarded the Advanced Diploma of Cyber Security participants must complete a total of twenty (20) units consisting of:
- nine (9) core units, plus
- eleven (11) elective units

A minimum of two units must be selected from each of the four (4) elective streams (General, Intrusion Analyst, Penetration Testing and Security Engineering streams).
The remaining three (3) units may be selected from the four (4) elective streams or from any endorsed Training Package or accredited course at Diploma level or above where they are consistent with the vocational outcomes of the course.

VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the ‘course structure and units’ below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

Previous completion of units at the Polytechnic or any other Registered Training Organisation and/or previous attainment of skills and knowledge may be credited towards this course. Units must satisfy the completion rules of the qualification and be assessed as appropriate by Victoria University Polytechnic.

Knowledge:
Graduates will have a specialised and integrated technical and theoretical knowledge with depth in the field of cyber security.

Skills:
Graduates of the Advanced Diploma will have:
• Cognitive and communication skills to identify, analyse and act on cyber security risks, threats and incidents in an organisation
• Cognitive and communication skills to transfer knowledge and skills to others concerning cyber security risks in workplace practices and to demonstrate specialised knowledge in mitigation strategies
• Cognitive and communication skills to formulate responses to complex cyber security problems such as protecting critical infrastructure
• Wide-ranging specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills to express ideas and perspectives on compliance issues and design methodologies to improve an organisation's cyber security

Application of knowledge and skills:
Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Cyber Security will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills:
• With depth in areas of organisational data security in a context subject to ongoing change
• With initiative and judgement plan, design and manage cyber security projects with some direction
• To adapt a range of fundamental principles and complex techniques to known and unknown cyber security situations
• Across a broad range of technical cyber security functions with accountability for personal and/or team outputs within an organisational context.

The amount you pay for your course depends on whether you’re offered a government subsidised place or a full fee-paying place.

Students who enrol in a:

  • government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
  • full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however participants are required advanced IT skills to successfully complete the course.
VU Polytechnic requires applicants to have :
Successful completion 22334VIC Certificate IV in Cyber Security (or equivalent)
or
relevant experience in cyber security work in ICT industry (technical domain)
Applicants will be required to complete a pre-training interview and complete a literacy and numeracy assessment to assist with determining with eligibility.
Students undertaking study part time will take approximately two (2) years to complete depending on subjects undertaken per semester.
